I’ve been a fan of ABBA since my dad bought me an album of theirs when I was only three years old; as a child I was obsessed with them – and give or take a few early teenage years, that obsession has never really wavered.
I love all their albums (although I have to confess that I actually have never listened properly to Ring Ring – their debut album that was only released belatedly in the UK in 1992). Their last full studio album, the dark and futuristic ‘The Visitors’ (from 1981) is probably my all-time favourite long-player.
Hope of any further new music, after the final two singles – the even more downbeat, but beautiful, ‘The Day Before You Came’ (a now, rightfully-recognised masterpiece), and the uber-80’s synth and vocoder-laden ‘Under Attack’; long faded after they had repeatedly batted off suggestions and offers to reunite over the years. We would have to make do with the – impeccable – back catalogue, and most of us were resigned to this.
